Caterpillar Control using Egg Parasites

Caterpillar Control using Egg Parasites

These .9 mm. miniature, stingless wasps lay their eggs inside the larger eggs of moths and prevent the caterpillars from hatching. They live only 7 days in their immature form, and up to 10 days as adults. This means that they go through up to 30 generations in a year, destroying caterpillar eggs each time. Ideal conditions for these insects are between 70 and 85 degrees F, with relative humidity of 60%. They can live in a wide range of conditions, but cooler temperatures will slow their reproduction and development. The egg cards are effective and easy to distribute. Ants will eat their eggs, so egg cards must be protected. You can do this by stapling the cards to leaves where they will be less accessible to ants, or by hatching the eggs before release. Instructions for pre-hatching are included in each shipment. In order to be effective, they must be released when moth eggs are available, so you must know when the species you wish to control lays its eggs. Trichograma minutum are ideal for release in an orchard or on crops taller than 8 feet. Trichograma pretiosum are better for a field or greenhouse where crops are under 8 feet tall. Many moths and butterflies are endangered species. Although the wasps do not travel far, it is useful to know what insects exist in your area before releasing parasites which can damage a wide range of species.
