Eco-Friendly Vacuum Cleaners

Allergic to housework? Try an allergy vacuum. Conventional air-bag-equipped vacuums pickup dust and dust mites, only to send them back out the exhaust hatch. Allergy vacuums do not. If someone in your home suffers from dust mite allergies, here are some steps you can take:
  • Use an allergy vacuum or install a central vacuum-cleaning system, vented away from the living area.
  • Keep the relative humidity in your home under 45%. Air conditioning or a dehumidifier can help.
  • Remove live mites from your bedding by washing in hot water (130°F or more).
  • Replace down pillows and bedding with synthetic material. That's right - synthetic material. Allergens lurking in feather bedding are far more perilous to people suffering from asthma and allergies than synthetics.
PROCEED WITH CAUTION: Dust mite populations can also be controlled by applying acaricides to mite-infested materials. These products should be used carefully. If chemical products are applied, they must be removed before allowing pets or children to reenter the area. Residues are often difficult to remove completely from carpets and upholstery.
