Green thumbs unite

GREEN thumbs from near and far were out in force in the Wimmera at the weekend as Yarriambiack Shire Council and Greening Australia hosted the seventh annual Yarrilinks tree planting weekend in the Murtoa district.

More than 100 volunteers attended the two-day event in support of Greening Australia's project to boost tree planting on district farms.

Australian conservation volunteers from Adelaide and members of the Adult Multi-cultural Education Services from Melbourne travelled by bus to help Wimmera volunteers and Greening Australia representatives.

This year's project had been designed by Greening Australia to combine environmental benefits, community involvement and to introduce people to the history and social aspects the Wimmera has to offer.

The hard workers had a chance to relax and enjoy the weekend at a special dinner held at the Murtoa racecourse on Saturday evening.

Yarrilinks has worked on roadside reserves in the Wimmera landscape to provide a framework for more extensive planting on farms.

Thirty Yarriambiack district landholders have signed on to the project.
