Green fuel to power G8 Summit vehicles

Biodiesel produced by Argent Energy and supplied by Petroplus will reduce the carbon dioxide emitted during the G8 Summit

5th July 2005 - The vehicles transporting the materials and equipment for the world leaders, ministers and their entourage at this week’s G8 Summit in Gleneagles will be running on a cleaner, greener fuel. The biodiesel, supplied by Teeside-based Petroplus, is produced by Argent Energy from tallow and used cooking oil at the world’s largest plant of its kind.

UK’s Prime Minister Tony Blair has put climate change at the heart of his 12-month presidency of the Group of Eight industrial nations. There has been strong direction from the Government to reduce the emissions of all activities around the G8 Summit and this is exemplified by the use of biodiesel in the Summit vehicles.

Petroplus’ Bio-plus blend is made from 5 per cent biodiesel from Argent Energy and 95 per cent low sulphur mineral diesel. It will result in G8 Summit vehicles emitting approximately five per cent less carbon dioxide, the main gas responsible for global warming.

Hamish Curran, Chief Operating Officer of Argent Energy, expands on this, “The Government has expressed its support for the development of renewable, low carbon transport fuels. Our biodiesel has been proven to have a positive impact on the environment. We take waste products, such as animal fats and used cooking oils and turn them into a high-quality clean fuel. We have developed sophisticated quality, safety and environmental management systems to ensure that our fuel meets the latest European quality standards. We are delighted to supply the G8 vehicles with a greener alternative to power their vehicles at such an important Summit.”

Dr Stephen Thomason, Marketing Director of Petroplus Refining Teesside Ltd, said: “Not only will our fuel, Bio-plus, reduce the emissions around the G8 Summit, it has improved lubricity and therefore will positively impact on the engine’s life. The UK Government is taking the use of alternative fuels very seriously. We are working hard with the Government to make sure all users can benefit from this fuel and we look forward to supplying the G8 Summit vehicles with Bio-plus and making a positive impact on the environment in the future.”
