Local schoolyards go green

More local schools are going green.

St. Paul the Apostle School in Garson and Alexander Public School on Brendon St. are following the pioneering efforts of Copper Cliff and Long Lake public schools in turning their schoolyards into plant and wildlife paradises.

St. Paul School won The Ugliest Schoolyard Contest, organized by VETAC, the City of Greater Sudbury’s re-greening committee.

VETAC reviewed 21 submissions from schools in all four School Boards in the city. The winner receives thousands of dollars of trees, plants and supplies to help re-green their grounds.

Canadian Tire on Regent St. will donate $5,000 worth of materials for St. Paul’s schoolyard makeover in September.

Alexander Public School will also have a grand opening this fall for their Wildlife Habitat Garden begun this spring according to parent and organizer Naomi Grant.

“The opening will coincide with Alexander’s 75 year anniversary celebrations,” she said.
