AT LEAST a third of food served in school dinners should be organic, according to a Green councillor.
Councillor Darren Johnson has called for Lewisham council to adopt targets recommended by the Soil Association.
These include 30 per cent of all food in school meals to be organic, 50 per cent sourced from the region and three-quarters made from unprocessed ingredients.
Cllr Johnson said: "Children have a right to safe, healthy food. It is a scandal that organic food is not currently available in Lewisham school meals and the Mayor needs to act urgently to put that right."
Lewisham Mayor Steve Bullock said a new catering policy had improved school meals and added that introducing organic schools was a possibility.
He said: "Officers are currently working with headteachers and a catering contractor, Scolarest, to explore the introduction of organic food as part of the improvements to school catering."
