SCS (also formerly known as "Green Cross") offers "independent third party certification and consulting services." The company certifies claims of specific environmental attributes (like recycled content), and also certifies broader "environmentally preferable" claims using life cycle analysis. SCS bases its life cycle assessments on the international ISO-14042 standards. SCS' Life Cycle Impact Assessment is based on a review of about 20 core environmental indicators that fall under the two broad categories of Net Resources Depleted and Emission Loadings. The company has testing laboratories and performs on-site inspections. Products and services SCS assesses include building materials, energy production systems, textiles and apparel, forest products, steel products, glass, household appliances, telecommunications equipment, paint, and plastics. SCS' specialty areas include certifying food safety (no pesticide residues on produce), forest conservation and fishery/marine conservation practices. It worked with the Forest Stewardship Council and Marine Stewardship Council to develop those standards. SCS has had its standards reviewed by industry and academic experts and by the FTC and FDA. Its standards are also consistent with federal guidelines for environmentally preferable purchasing. (For environmental claims in Asia, SCS has partnered with the Environment and Development Foundation, a third-party certification agency in Taiwan.) SCS' standards and processes have been published.
