International Organization for Standardization

iso
The 14000 Series are environmental standards established by delegates from more than 100 member countries, representing national standards bodies, government agencies, industry, and some environmental organizations. The ISO-14040 group covers life cycle assessment. 14042 provides the criteria for comparative environmental claims on products. Other parts of the series cover environmental management standards for companies and organizations (more than 600 U.S. companies have ISO-14000 certification.). Other series cover other types of quality standards for companies and products. Compliance is voluntary. Certification is done by bodies approved by an ISO Registrar Accreditation Board. ISO's U.S. member body is the American National Standards Institute (ANSI). The ISO 14020 series documents provide principles and guidelines for standards of environmental claims, testing and certifying of such claims, and third-party verification. More ISO 14000 certifications were done in 1999 than in any preceding year. U.S. companies got 345 new certificates, bringing the country's total beyond 500. (Over 3,000 have been issued in Japan, and over 1,000 in Germany and in Britain. Companies in 84 countries now have ISO 14000 certificates.)
